A Simple Sew

A couple of days ago, I whipped up this easy dress using the 3-Seam Caftan Tutorial from Simple Simon & Company.  I've seen Caftan Dresses before but the way that Elizabeth used shirring just above the waist on her daughter's dress convinced me that this could be a comfy play dress for my soon-to-be-kindergartener (whom I seriously doubt would wear a wide belt as many teens/grown-ups do with this style).

My daughter loves it.  In fact, I told her she could change out of it after I snapped some pictures and she absolutely didn't want to . . . and later that evening she wanted to sleep in it too.  She has started shopping my slim knit stash for another dress which kind of makes me want one too (the black/gray stripe is MINE).

I followed the instructions pretty faithfully although I finished my seams.  It would have been much faster not to but raw edges kind of bother me.  To take the scary out of hemming the knit, I cheated and used 1/4" Steam-A-Seam 2 double stick fusible web.  Then, I stitched over the fused hem just like a regular old hem.  Sneaky, right?  It stayed nice and smooth and didn't get wonky and stretched out (insert cheering here).  I think I have found some new knit confidence - any other knit projects that I should try?
